Some thoughts from a tired brain - 2005/05/04 00:28 I found this on another board I belong to and it intrigued me as to the state of todays society

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 5-year-old girl was handcuffed by police after she tore papers off a bulletin board and punched an assistant principal in kindergarten class, according to a video released by a lawyer for the child’s mother.

The 30-minute tape shows the child appearing to calm down before three officers pinned her arms behind her back and put on handcuffs as she screamed, “No!”

The camera was rolling March 14 as part of a classroom self-improvement exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary, attorney John Trevena said.

This made me think, is the child in this situation to blame or is there a lack of parenting at home. In the full article it states that the mother was unavailable when they tried to contact her.

What brought this to mind today so much was as I was out running errands I noticed the car in front of me. A 2 door Hyundai something-or-other with a baby seat in the back, 2 older kids sitting beside it, what appeared to be grandma in the front passenger seat with another child on her lap and what I assumed was Mom driving and smoking, while constantly turning around to yell at the kids in the back. When I wasn't fearing for my own safety or that of the child on grandma's lap, I couldn't help but think, "Now this is where parenting classes would really come in handy!"

What makes us a good parent? Am I neuortic for not moving the car untill all occupants are safely strapped inside their seatbelts? Is it overkill to fear taking my daughter (7 yr old 54lbs) out in my MIL's car without a booster seat but still I'll let her leave the house first thing in the morning eating frozen waffles on the way to the bus stop? Is it wrong for me to think that my aforementioned 7 yr old should not dress like Britney Spears or wear makeup yet or see certain movies, but it's fine for her to stay up late occassionally and eat junk food and have her own form of watered down swear words to express anger?

More and more these days we see in the news kids who "act out" or bring guns to school; parents with no self restraint beating up/shooting the coach etc. I am hoping that I'll never become one of those parents, but how do I ensure that my kid doesn't become one of the kids who flips out in school and thinks it's ok to hurt everyone else?

Why aren't the little boogers born with a manual?

Rant over, I now return you to your regular programming!
