Being a Pagan Parent PDF Print E-mail

Since starting on my Pagan path seven or eight years ago I have become a mother for the second time. Since my first child was christened and basically raised in the Catholic faith I sometimes felt lost as to what or how to raise my little girl. How was I to be a good Pagan parent?

Here’s what I have found after years of trial and tribulation…..

Don’t sweat it! Quite simple really, isn’t it?! I struggled with the idea that I wasn’t showing my daughter my “faith” and you know what? That’s fine. It struck me just last summer that religion to a child so young (she’s 6) is indoctrination, she has no real concept of what “God” is and she doesn’t need one.

We have one slight problem we live in the Bible Belt! I know there is separation of church and state, but she still comes home talking about God. I try not to bristle when she comes of with comments like, “God loves me Mommy”. I often just reply with, “That’s right honey, everyone loves you”! We debated whether or not she should say “Under God” in the pledge each morning, and I get “around” this fact by telling her there are lots of different gods out there, that not everyone has the same god. Most of her little classmates are Christian and go on about how God loves them and they talk about heaven. My greatest accomplishment has been to hear her say, “It’s ok for x,y,z to die, cos it’s all part of the circle of life isn’t that right?” She understands that even though things and people die that it is ok.

So take heart, being a Pagan Parent doesn’t have to be hard nor does it mean your child will be outcast. Just keep your mind open and hopefully your child will follow suit.
